The Derivative

A slope for every point

An interactive lesson with 6 steps, about 5 minutes: you predict, drag and solve, with instant feedback on every answer. It runs in your browser and needs JavaScript.

What you’ll learn

  • f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)hf'(x) = \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(x + h) - f(x)}{h} is the slope of ff at xx.
  • Lines: f′f' is the constant slope. Constants: f′=0f' = 0. (x2)′=2x(x^2)' = 2x and (x3)′=3x2(x^3)' = 3x^2.
  • f′>0f' > 0 where ff is increasing, f′<0f' < 0 where it's decreasing, and f′=0f' = 0 at peaks and valleys.
